Awaken the Giant

Malika Dzhamaldaeva won the contest. Her project “Awaken the Giant” involves a figure resembling Michelangelo’s David, who floats inside a box in foetal position, which is partly inspired by refugees crammed into unseaworthy crafts, partly by John Lennon’s pose in Annie Leibovit’s iconic photograph appeared on the January 1981 issue of Rolling Stones and taken in the morning of December 8 1980, a few hours before his death.

Central topics were precision and resolution. The human figures (having to stay inside the contest limits) is small but we were asked for the highest precision: the concept is based mostly on emotions and feelings: the watcher must feel the anxiety and suffering the figure is feeling. Because of those reasons we used Sharebot Spirit, our professional low-cost 3D printer with DLP technology, so that we could reach the highest resolution (50 microns on Z) with smooth, precise and detailed surfaces.
